Basic Care

Diet

The best diet for dogs differs from dog to dog. However, all dogs require high-quality food (whether it be kibble or homemade) and access to fresh and clean water at all times. A dog’s diet should correlate to their age and size. For example, puppies require more nutrients to grow than senior dogs, therefore their diet should reflect that. Whether it be kibble made exclusively for puppies or homemade meals, having the nutrition that promotes the dog’s development and health most effectively is essential. Furthermore, portion size is imperative to dog health and preventing obesity.

Research dog breed for energy level before adopting. Keep in mind, energy level based off of breed is a generalization and dogs within the breed differ in energy. Some dogs require more of an outlet for their pent-up energy than others. Make sure that your lifestyle and willingness to play matches your dog’s. Remember that all dogs (even low-energy ones) need daily exercise which can include walks, playtime, and backyard time.

Grooming and hygiene is often overlooked before adopting. All dogs require:

  • Regular brushing

  • Nail trimming

  • Ear cleaning

  • Dental care

Training prevents behavioral problems down the line. Whether it is house training, leash manners, or basic commands (sit, stay, etc.), these are skills dogs can fairly easily acquire and master with consistent training. Furthermore, these skills are useful for communication, safety, and trust between dog and owner.

Preventative care is imperative for ensuring your fluffy companion is healthy and safe. This includes:

  • Vaccinations

  • Annual wellness exams

  • Parasite prevention

  • Diet

Most importantly, dogs require your unconditional love and affection.
